BU Trounces Harvard 7-1 in Beanpot Semifinal
Terriers will vie for their 32nd Beanpot championship next Monday at TD Garden
The Boston University men’s ice hockey team was on the ropes early in the first period of their Beanpot semifinal matchup Monday night at TD Garden. Down 1-0 to Harvard, the Terriers were struggling with passing, zone time, and defensive breakdowns.
But then they woke up.
Devin Kaplan (SHA’26) found the back of the net near the end of the first period, and the Terriers took control of the game.
Kaplan’s two goals helped BU to a 7-1 win over Harvard in the 72nd edition of the Dunkin’ Beanpot semifinals. The Terriers are now set for the championship bout against Boston College next Monday, February 10, at 7:30 pm, where they’ll vie for their 32nd Beanpot trophy. (BC defeated Northeastern 8-2 in the night’s later game.)

“Off of that [goal], we started making some plays. The puck started going in the net for us, so a really strong effort overall,” head coach Jay Pandolfo (CAS’96) said in the postgame press conference. “We’re real happy for our group that we have an opportunity to play for the Beanpot next Monday night.”
This was the 49th time BU and Harvard have met in the tournament, with the Terriers now holding a 31-18 advantage. The two teams played in an exhibition earlier this season, with BU taking the shoot-out win in a 2-2 contest.
Both teams sleep-walked their way through the first minutes of Monday night’s game until BU defenseman Cole Hutson (CAS’28) took a hooking penalty at 4:46. The penalty was an early test for the Terriers penalty kill, tied for the fourth-worst mark in the NCAA.
It didn’t take long for Harvard to make the first goal of the game. The Crimson’s Ian Moore flung a pass on net and Casey Severo collected it. BU goaltender Mikhail Yegorov (CAS’28) stopped the initial shot, but lost track of the rebound. From there, all Severo had to do was push the puck into the net for a 1-0 Harvard advantage at 5:44 of the first period.
Yegorov, who arrived at BU just this semester, ended the semifinal with 26 saves in his third-ever start as a Terrier.
After surviving a penalty kill at 9:16, BU started to pick up steam in the latter half of the period. Kaplan surged up the ice on the rush, passing the puck toward linemate Jack Hughes (COM’25). The pass went a little too far, and Hughes started to circle the net before slotting the puck back to Kaplan at the doorstep of the crease. Kaplan’s sixth goal of the season and fourth career goal at TD Garden evened the game 1-1 at 15:47.
“I’ve been watching the Beanpot and the Terriers for as long as I can remember, so these games really mean something to me,” Kaplan said. “When we get to this stage, it’s pretty special, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be able to play in an environment like this.”
The early-game lull mirrored the hushed TD Garden in the evening’s early slot, but the Terriers ended the period with a flourish.
BU seized that momentum in the opening minutes of the second period. Harvard’s Ben MacDonald was sent to the box for a high-sticking penalty at 2:55, putting the Terriers’ seventh-ranked power play to work.
Quinn Hutson (SHA’26) sent the puck down to captain Shane Lachance (SHA’27), whose physicality in front of the net has become a hallmark of his game. Lachance collected the puck and slipped it through his legs before flicking it past Harvard goaltender Ben Charette for a 2-1 lead at 3:25.

Then, the skill gap between Harvard and BU became glaringly apparent. Cole Hutson added another signature play to his résumé, wheeling around Harvard’s Kyle Aucoin. Hutson had only the goaltender in front of him when he slid the puck through the five-hole to give BU a 3-1 edge at 5:59.
“I started off the game slow with a pretty selfish penalty,” said Hutson, who scored two goals in the game. “I owed it to the team to rise to the occasion.”
But the Terriers wouldn’t stop there. When Jack Harvey (CAS’27) found himself all alone on a rush, he skated across the middle of the ice, moving Charette to his left before sniping the puck into the top right corner of the net at 11:24. The fourth-straight goal gave BU a near-insurmountable 4-1 advantage.
BU tacked on its fifth goal at 18:37 when Hughes and Kaplan connected for the tandem’s second goal of the evening. In the waning seconds of the period, the Terriers wanted one more goal, and they got it when Quinn Hutson snuck the puck just over the line at 19:49.
Harvard replaced Charette with junior Aku Koskenvuo to start the third period. Cole Hutson then capped the Terriers’ win with a solo effort, skating into the zone by himself and sneaking the puck through the legs of the new netminder 14:52 into the period to end the game with a 7-1 finish.

“There’s no question [that] in the final you don’t want to have a slow start,” Pandolfo said. “They’ve been in this moment before, so I expect our group to be ready next Monday.”
