  1. “Build your network”

This is sage advice. Keep in mind that networking became exceedingly difficult during the pandemic. Students were unable to attend networking events or participation in networking opportunities. A very small group of students graduated without being able to build a network in a prospective industry.
Virtual networking events hosted by BU have not been helpful.

“Definitely get in touch with the BU Alumni Network. One of the things you’re paying for by going to BU is access to this alumni network.”

This is true, yet I feel this has not been helpful.

After updating my info and reaching out to the BU Alumni Network, listing my location for regional networking and interests and industry for relevant networking, I was hoping that BU Alumni Relations would be put me in contact with BU Alumni in my desired industry. After all, I provided that information and more. Sorta say to me: “here is list of alumni in your desired industry or have similar interests, reach out to them!”

I expected BU Alumni Relations to act as the conduit for getting recent graduate and other alumni in touch with BU Alumni already in an industry or provide avenues to that industry. This has not happened. Who is in my industry? I do not know.

Similarly – going in the other direction – I thought BU Alumni Relations would reach out to alumni already in a profession and industry, letting them know that there are recent graduates or other alumni who share interests or desire work in an industry. Again, BU Alumni Relations would act as the conduit, putting alumni already in the industry in contact with recent graduates and other alumni. This would become almost like an unofficial alumni mentorship initiative.

Although I gained access to the exclusive BU Alumni group on LinkedIn, I have not seen anything related to my industry at this time. Based on postings, however, I can see how it might be helpful to others.

In the end, I have not heard much from the BU Alumni Relations or seen its worth, but I’m quite sure the BU Alumni Network will contact me when its time for donations.
