Whether you’ve just started dating or have been together awhile, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced couples to adapt. Most suddenly find themselves living far apart, others decided to take the plunge and move in together. And couples already together find that date nights now look a lot different.

Our student video producer Aaron Hwang (ENG’21) has been thinking a lot about dating and love lately, as he and his partner, Jamie Dela Cruz (CAS’21), prepare to mark their second anniversary. 

In our video, they talk about how the pandemic has impacted their life together. Aaron also interviews two other couples, Camryn Williams (ENG’21) and her partner, UMass Lowell student Jake Sallaway, who met on Bumble just before the pandemic began, and Nichole Alvarez (CAS’21) and Mercedes Valladares (CAS’21), who have been together nearly four years. The couples talk frankly about how the pandemic has shaped their romantic lives and forced them to make decisions that they might have previously put off for a while. 

Their advice for other couples, whether newly formed or long cemented? Communicate. And embracing the fact that we’re living in a very different time than we were a year ago, be flexible and adapt.

    Aaron Hwang (ENG’21) is majoring in mechanical engineering. He has been producing a growing number of videos for BU's various online media outlets since arriving as a freshman in 2017. After he first picked up a camera in 2013, his filmmaking has taken him to rainy Taipei streets, Tokyo shrines, Himalayan valleys, and all corners of Boston neighborhoods. His work spans dance concept videos, narrative short films, and most notably, advertisements, as the resident filmmaker for Sleek Machine. Suddenly remembering that he's an engineering student, Aaron has also been a mechanical systems leader for BU Racing and interned with independent pen manufacturer Schon DSGN. On weekends, he spends a lot of time designing his custom camera gear, playing board games, taking copious amounts of photos, and searching for Boston's best eggs Benedict. Profile

  1. This video is so sweet! Wonderful job overall, with the interviews, the storytelling, and the production. My partner and I already lived together before all this, but we’ve actually really enjoyed the opportunity to spend so much quality time together. I can’t imagine needing to so suddenly make such big life decisions because of the pandemic, though. Anyway, this is a perfect pre-Valentine’s video!
