American moviegoers have grown accustomed to the archetypal superhero origin story: underdog outcast overcomes adversity and tragedy to fight for justice. But what about the supervillain origin story?
The wait is over. Joker hits theaters today, tracing the background story of the infamous DC Comics villain and Batman’s archenemy, the Joker. Set in 1981 in Gotham City, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who resorts to a life of crime. The film—which has already drawn critical raves—is expected to take in as much as $105 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Joker marks the launch of DC Black, a series of DC-based standalone films (films with no planned sequels).
Produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed by Todd Phillips, the psychological thriller arrives in movie theaters with high expectations. Starring as the titular character, Joaquin Phoenix won the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Actor Award last month and has already received Oscar buzz for his performance. Joker is expected to be a leading contender for the best picture Oscar and holds a 76 percent approval rating from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The film’s starpower extends beyond Phoenix. He’s joined by two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro, who plays a talk show host who has a role in Fleck’s downfall, Emmy-nominated actor Zazie Beetz as Fleck’s love interest, and Golden Globe winner Frances Conroy as his mother.
We’re marking the film’s much anticipated release with a trivia contest. One lucky winner will receive two tickets to a screening tonight at AMC Loews Boston Common 19.
