Attention all ice cream enthusiasts. The Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl, the nation’s largest all-you-can-eat ice cream festival, returns to City Hall Plaza today. The annual fundraiser supports the Jimmy Fund, which provides adult and pediatric cancer care at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Scooper Bowl first launched in 1983 with just four local ice cream companies that served about 1,000 people. Over the ensuing decades, it’s become one of the city’s most popular fundraisers. This year, more than 40,000 people from all over the country are expected to attend. Discounted tickets can be preordered online or purchased on site the day you attend. Since it began, the Scooper Bowl has raised nearly $6.3 million for cancer research and care.
This year’s dozen vendors include nationally recognized manufacturers like Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry’s, Friendly’s, and Edy’s, as well as lesser-known regional names like Bart’s Ice Cream and Blake’s Ice Cream. Lactose-intolerant ice cream lovers can indulge as well, courtesy of Lactaid products. With 55 flavors being served up, it may be hard to choose.
New to this year’s fundraiser is Scoop@Night, a special event for those 21 and over. Presented in partnership with Harpoon, UFO Beers, 90+ Cellars, and Martignetti, the event takes place Thursday, June 7, from 5 to 8 pm. Tickets for Scoop@Night are sold separately and include two adult beverage tickets and unlimited ice cream from Bart’s Ice Cream, Baskin-Robbins, Beckon Ice Cream, Vice Cream, Blake’s Ice Cream, and Yasso. The event runs alongside the Scooper Bowl in a separate tented area.
And, in keeping with tradition, this year’s Scooper Bowl will feature plenty of live music. Among those scheduled to perform are Dan and the Wild Fire, and the Unoriginals.
It’s a cool way to indulge your sweet tooth while benefiting a terrific cause.
The Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl is being held at Boston’s City Hall Plaza today, Tuesday, June 5, through Thursday, June 7, from noon to 8 pm each day. Tickets ($10 for adults and children 10 and older and $5 for children 3 to 9) can be purchased in advance online here or on site ($15 for adults, $10 for children). Discounted rates for groups of 15 or more are also available ($8 for adults, $3 for children). Those who plan to go more than once should consider purchasing a Scooper Pass, $20 for a three-time entrance. Find a full list of vendors and flavors here. Take any MBTA Green Line trolley to Park Street and walk down Tremont Street to City Hall Plaza. The Scoop@Night event is Thursday, June 7, from 5 to 8 pm. The event is 21+ only and a valid ID is required. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online and include unlimited ice cream and two adult beverages.
