Boston’s streets and plazas will be filled with music today courtesy of Berklee College of Music’s annual free Summer in the City concert series, which features students, alumni, and faculty performing programs of pop, jazz, rock, Latin, and more. Today’s performances, all starting at noon, offer listeners a chance to catch some of the city’s best musical talent. So take a lunch break and head over to City Hall Plaza, Summer Street, the Prudential Center, or the Boston Common for a real summer treat.
Pop and soul singer-songwriter Stephanie James brings her powerful vocals and poignant lyrics to City Hall Plaza. Her recently released debut album, Rise with the Tide, explores themes of rebirth and revival. Meanwhile, Newark, N.J., native Hunter LaMar, known for his considerable hip-hop, gospel, R&B, and classical music creds, performs at Downtown Crossing on Summer Street. LaMar, who has opened for the likes of Taleb Kweli, Michael Christmas, and Nas, is at work on his first album, Eurydice. Ecuadorian-American performer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ricky Peña, who is set to release his first single, “Siento,” takes the stage at the Prudential Center for a concert featuring Latin, blues, and jazz cuts. And jazz-pianist and recent Berklee grad Danae Greenfield presents a concert of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and reggae music at Brewer Plaza on the Boston Common. The Seattle native began studying classical piano at age 6, switched to jazz at 12, and has shared a stage with such noted musicians as Chick Corea and Ambrose Akinmusire.
Berklee’s Summer in the City series brings free live music to venues throughout the Boston area almost daily each summer, concluding with the annual Beantown Jazz Festival, this year being held on Saturday, September 30. Find a complete list of summer 2017 concerts here. Today’s free concerts are at noon around Boston: Stephanie James at City Hall Plaza, One City Hall Square; Hunter LaMar at 100 Summer St., Downtown Crossing; Ricky Peña at the Prudential Center, 800 Boylston St.; and Danae Greenfield at Brewer Plaza on the Boston Common.
