Update at 7:55 p.m.: Power, which was expected to be restored by 7 p.m. is now expected to to be restored by 9 p.m.
Utility officials have told BU that a power outage at 30 University buildings would be fixed by 9 p.m. Wednesday. The 30 buildings—all of them from 58 to 147 Bay State Rd., except for one at 55 Deerfield St.—lost power around 6 a.m. The utility Eversource told BU that “an underground, manhole-mounted transformer failed,” says Bill Walter, assistant vice president for operations and services. Affected buildings include 12 for University housing, eight academic buildings, two administrative buildings, and eight rental buildings, Walter says. Affected University operations include BU’s investment office, general counsel’s office, government and community affairs, and the three ROTC programs, he says. “These people have had no heat and minimal lighting, other than what you can get in from the sun,” Walter says. Originally, the outage had spread further, affecting Commonwealth Avenue and elsewhere, but that power was restored, he says.
