Boston University’s Police Department Seeks Reaccreditation
Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission will conduct review beginning April 27
A team from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) will review the Boston University Police Department’s policies and procedures, operations, and facilities beginning April 27.
Reaccreditation by the commission certifies that the BUPD meets standards established by the profession.
The assessors will review the department’s policies, tour its facilities, and examine equipment to make sure it meets safety standards. They will also examine evidence storage locations and determine whether proper security measures are in place.
The commission’s mission is “to ensure that the delivery of police services within the Commonwealth is at the highest level of professionalism and integrity.” Achieving accreditation is a prized recognition of law enforcement excellence.
The BUPD was first accredited by MPAC in 2011 and is one of 16 college or university police departments in the state to achieve that recognition, out of 136 departments statewide. Departments must be reaccredited every three years.
To be accredited, the BUPD must meet all 274 mandatory standards and a percentage of 120 optional standards.
