BU Bostones Head to A Cappella Finals
A chance to be number one in the United States
For the first time in a decade, a BU-based a cappella group will strut its stuff at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella tournament finals. After taking first place April 17 at the ICCA semifinals at Boston Symphony Hall, the BU Bostones are headed to New York City, where they will represent the entire Northeastern United States tomorrow, April 30. They are among 10 groups, hailing from every US region, along with one from the United Kingdom, competing in the finals.
The Bostones will perform “Déjà Vu,” by Beyoncé, “I Miss You,” by Adele, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” by Lauryn Hill, and “If I Go,” by Ella Eyre at the Beacon Theatre, where the finals are being held.
“We are ecstatic to be advancing to the International Finals in New York City,” says Bostones president Melissa Primrose (Questrom’16). “Over 350 groups have competed for a chance to be in our shoes, and we are humbled to be representing the entire Northeast region, as well as BU’s a capella community. We have been working incredibly hard to get to this point, and we cannot wait to leave it all on the stage at the Beacon Theatre.”
A cappella groups have long thrived at BU, and three of its ensembles—the Bostones, In Achord, and the Boston University Treblemakers—made it to the ICCA semifinals this year. Judged on visual as well as vocal performance, groups voted first at the finals have in the past gone on to television appearances and concert bookings.
Founded in 1996, the BU Bostones say they bring “a new dimension of soul, sweetness, and sass to the Boston a cappella scene.” They describe themselves as “a coed group of undergraduates focused on delivering the sickest solos, most awesome arrangements, and ballin’ beatboxing during each of our performances. Not to mention we’re great with alliteration.” The Bostones perform a winter and spring concert each year, in addition to benefits and other gigs.
Tomorrow’s New York competition is officially sold out, but tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert are available on StubHub, with prices starting at $109.
