    Rich Barlow is a senior writer at BU Today and Bostonia magazine. Perhaps the only native of Trenton, N.J., who will volunteer his birthplace without police interrogation, he graduated from Dartmouth College, spent 20 years as a small-town newspaper reporter, and is a former Boston Globe religion columnist, book reviewer, and occasional op-ed contributor.   1. Shouldn’t the fact that the students are pursuing graduate degrees in the College of Communication mean that they are already proficient in English? Is it fair to give only Chinese-speaking students this special opportunity when there are many foreign students from all around the world that face similar challenges?

    1. … because heaven forbid we try this out with one (substantial)population to see how well it goes before deciding whether to expand it to other groups. Is that what you mean, Anonymous at 10:29 a.m.?
