Studies show that 93 percent of people consider breakfast the most important meal of the day. For the Class of 2014, which will gather in the George Sherman Union today at 10 a.m. for Senior Breakfast, it will probably be the most memorable meal of the month. The menu prepared for the 2,200 seniors expected to attend is fresh seasonal fruit, blueberry scones, Applewood-smoked bacon, and pesto bruschetta strata. But the highlight of the occasion will be the announcement of the featured speakers at Commencement on Sunday, May 18.
Rev. Robert Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, will start the meal with prayer. Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore will emcee this official kickoff event of the 2014 Commencement ceremonies. Student leaders will talk about Senior Week activities and the progress of the Class Gift Campaign.
Lindsay Roth, Development and Alumni Relations associate director of annual giving, says close to 2,014 seniors have donated to the Class Gift, which provides them the option of earmarking their donation to the specific programs, clubs, and projects on campus that mean the most to them. Those who donate at least $20.14 can request that their donation honor a specific professor, mentor, or classmate. Honorees will receive a handwritten note and a small gift in June.
Seniors who have donated by Monday, May 5, will be entered in a drawing to win a chance to conduct the Boston Pops at BU Night at the Pops on May 17. The winner will be announced on the Senior Class Gift Facebook page on May 5.
Elmore (SED’87) will also present several student awards—from the Scarlet Key Society, the Community Service Center, the Student Activities Office, and the BU Alumni Association.
At the end of the program, President Robert A. Brown will announce this year’s Commencement speaker, honorary degree recipients, Baccalaureate and student speakers, and winners of the University’s highest teaching honor, the Metcalf Cup and Prize and the Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
Senior Breakfast is at 10 a.m. today in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, with overflow seating available throughout the facility.
Check back on BU Today this afternoon for an updated article on Senior Breakfast, with the names of the Commencement speaker, honorary degree recipients, Baccalaureate and student speakers, and Metcalf Cup and Prize and Metcalf Award winners.
Seniors can donate to the Class Gift here, with cash, a credit card, or a text to pledge.
