Terrier Teams Split Home Doubleheader
Women's b-ball beats Binghamton, men fall to Vermont
The BU women’s basketball team topped Binghamton 83-61 Wednesday, January 14, in the first match of a Terrier doubleheader at Agganis Arena, but the men fell to conference rival Vermont 70-56. Both teams continue conference play this weekend, as the women face New Hampshire at home and the men take on Binghamton in New York.
John Holland (CGS’09) led the men in scoring, racking up 19 points, followed by Corey Lowe (SHA’10) with 16. The Terriers, now 6-9, 1-2 America East, were coming off a decisive victory over New Hampshire, 68-37, on January 11, while theCatamounts, now 10-6, 1-2 America East, were trying to avoid a third straight loss.
On the women’s side, Jesyka Burks-Wiley (CAS’09) and Christine Kinneary (CAS’09) poured in 22 points apiece as the team extended its unbeaten streak to four games. The Terriers improve to 9-6 overall and remain unbeaten in America East league action, with a 3-0 mark. Binghamton falls to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Kinneary earned America East Player of the Game honors after shooting 60.0 percent from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line and the senior point guard was just one point shy of matching a career high. Burks-Wiley recorded her fourth double-double of the season with her 22-point, 11-rebound performance. Binghamton’s AE Player of the Game Erica Carter was 4-for-10 from the field and hit two treys to finish with a team-high 12 points.
The Terriers were able to penetrate the Bearcats’ defense and their inside game produced 36 points in the paint. In addition, BU forced 19 Binghamton miscues to score 22 points off turnovers, while also winning the battle of the boards with a 41-34 advantage in rebounds.
Boston University had a comfortable 49-33 lead at halftime, following a game-changing 15-5 run midway through the first stanza that boosted BU from one point under to a nine-point advantage, 27-18. During that stretch, Kinneary knocked down seven points and the Terriers never looked back, extending their lead to as much as 20 points in the first half, 42-22 at 2:43.
In the second half, Binghamton would come as close as 14 points, 66-52, at 6:58; however, a 9-0 run brought the lead back up to 23 and put the game away as the Terriers reached 80 points for the fifth time this season.
BU will continue its homestand with a matchup with New Hampshire at Case Gym on Saturday, January 17. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
