Mozart Time Travels
Modern adaptation of Cosi Fan Tutte at Tsai
Mozart takes to the tennis court. Boston Midsummer Opera presents a modern version of the sex farce Cosi Fan Tutte, transplanted from 18th-century Italy to a contemporary Connecticut country club. Tonight is the first of three performances at Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center.
In this adaptation, the two male protagonists are graduates of a naval base in New London and their girlfriends are wealthy coeds on summer vacation. Despina, a maid in Mozart’s original, is the club’s snack bar attendant, and the men’s older friend Alfonso is a tennis player. BMO artistic director Drew Minter has spiced up the libretto about the vagaries of young love and passion with contemporary American colloquialisms. Mozart’s score, played by a full orchestra, remains intact.
Tonight’s curtain is at 7:30 p.m. There will be two other performances, Friday, August 7, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 9, at 3 p.m. The Tsai Performance Center is at 685 Comm Ave. Its box office is closed for the summer. Tickets for Cosi Fan Tutte cost between $20 and $50 and can be purchased online or by calling 617-227-0442.
