In the slide show above, hear from graphic design majors Michael Deal (CFA’09) and Sheryl Sulistiawan (CFA’09) and two of their teachers, Richard Doubleday and Yael Ort-Dinoor, about the Senior Degree Project.
Brandished on a wall at the George Sherman Union’s Sherman Gallery are brightly colored posters with clean graphics and catch phrases such as “You think I’m listening to music, but I’m really listening to you” and “I prefer female doctors.”
The poster series Microscope, created by graphic design major Matt Convente (CFA’09), is a portal to his inner thoughts. “I’ve displayed the posters in three rows,” Convente says, “and as you travel from the top row to the bottom, you get more and more highly personalized information — like increasing the magnification on a microscope.”
Sharing the gallery with Convente’s poster series is artwork from the capstone course Senior Degree Project of 25 graphic design seniors. “We asked them to take full authorship of this project,” says Richard Doubleday, an assistant professor in the College of Fine Arts. “For the first time, they developed their own design briefs. This leant itself to a wide range of projects, from very pragmatic designs — such as a series of info graphics about the Beatles designed by Michael Deal (CFA’09) — to more conceptual explorations, like a two-dimensional representation of dance movement by Sheryl Sulistiawan (CFA’09).”
“It’s a milestone for the students,” says Yael Ort-Dinoor, a CFA lecturer. “They are transitioning from student careers into professional graphic design lives. So it’s a celebration of that transition, as well as an opportunity to get real exposure.”
