Classic Comedy, Full of Errors
Shakespeare’s early play resurfaces outdoors, and free
The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company celebrates its 14th season of free theater under the stars with The Comedy of Errors. The farcical story of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth is believed to be one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, possibly his first.
The Comedy of Errors mixes the Bard’s favorite comedic device — mistaken identity — with slapstick humor and verbal puns. With the setting shifted to Miami’s South Beach during the 1930s, it is sprinkled with Latin music and playful dance interludes. Beach balls are on hand for audience interaction.
The local ensemble cast is directed by Steve Maler, the company’s founding artistic director. Admission is free; arrive early to stake out a seat close to the stage.
The Comedy of Errors runs Tuesdays to Sundays at the Boston Common Parkman Bandstand, next to the Park Street T station, through Sunday, August 16. Tonight’s show begins at 8 p.m. For more info, visit here or call 617-426-0863.
