Cheap Skates
Local rinks offer cool scenes, free glides

Ice skating season is here, a perfect reason to leave those books, ungraded exams, and last-minute holiday errands behind and get some crisp fresh air.
Boston, Brookline, and Brighton have rinks with public skating hours. All are a 20-minute T ride or short car trip away, and each location rents skates ($5 to $8 a pair). Outdoor rinks have warming huts to toast frosty fingers. And snack shops at all sites offer a quick (and cheap) bite.
Pick the frozen pond that’s best for you and lace up.
