Student Groups Unite for Peace
Tickets are on sale this week for a peace concert in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59), sponsored by 83 student organizations
Sidney Efromovich (CAS’09) wanted to create a “signature event” for the BU community. It appears that Efromovich and a committee of about 35 students have done just that. With the support of 83 student organizations, the Student Activities Office, and the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, the committee will sponsor a peace concert dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59) on Saturday, April 26, at 8 p.m. in the GSU’s Metcalf Ballroom.
Tickets — in the form of T-shirts with the word “peace” written on them in 108 languages, forming an illustration of a dove — are on sale this week for $10 each to the first 1,000 people. “There will be 1,000 people draped in peace walking into this great concert, where everyone will come together,” Efromovich says.
Five musical groups will perform: featured artist Braddigan (formerly of Dispatch), folk-rock singer-songwriter Amy Steinberg, the pop-rock Boston group Delhill, and BU bands Love in Stockholm and The Powers That Be.
The organizing committee also is selling paper cutouts of hands and peace signs, for $1 and $5, respectively, on which people can write messages of peace. The messages will form the backdrop for the concert. All proceeds will benefit Love, Light, and Melody, a nonprofit organization dedicated to battling the physical, emotional, and spiritual effects of extreme poverty.
Tickets will be on sale from 3 to 8 p.m. through Friday, March 28, at Warren Towers, Claflin Hall, Myles Standish Hall, the Towers, and the GSU Link. To buy cutouts or join the organizing committee, contact mlkpeace@gmail.com.
