Spring Show Opens at BU Theatre Tonight
Il Barbiere di Siviglia performance to benefit BU Women’s Guild
The Opera Institute and the school of theatre at the College of Fine Arts present Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia this weekend, from Thursday, April 17, through Sunday, April 20. Directed by Sharon Daniels, director of the Opera Institute and a school of music associate professor, and conducted by William Lumpkin, also a school of music associate professor, this humorous opera pits two men against each other in a race to the altar. With the help of the town barber, Figaro, the lovely Rosina manages to land the husband she desires.
“The familiar arias and comical disguises make Il Barbiere di Siviglia perfect for first-time opera goers and fun for the whole family,” Daniels says. “For the traditionalists, there will be the remarkable singing of Rossini’s challenging musical score, in Italian with supertitles. Acknowledging Rossini as the primary director, and revisiting the stage conventions and oral traditions of the opera, we will stretch the design concept and acting challenges into a surprising context, out of usual boundaries.”
On Thursday evening, a special fundraiser for the BU Women’s Guild was held prior to the performance. The guild hosted a champagne reception and a light supper, and Daniels and other members of the production staff spoke before the show. Proceeds from the $30 admission benefit the Women’s Guild Scholarship Fund, for women graduate students over age 30.
Il Barbiere di Siviglia will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, at the Boston University Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $15 for BU alumni, Huntington Theatre Company subscribers, WGBH members, students, and senior citizens. Members of the BU community receive one free ticket per BU ID at the door on the day of the performance, subject to availability.
