This weekend’s ArtBeat Festival in Somerville has an environmental theme
Somerville’s annual arts festival, ArtBeat, goes green this year with environmentally inspired artwork and activities. Hosted by the Somerville Arts Council, the festival takes place in Davis Square tonight, July 18, and all day tomorrow, July 19, and features a variety of events, among them dance performances and live music from local bands such as Township, Rollover Baby, and Freezepop, named the 2008 best act in Boston by the Boston Phoenix, featuring Jussi Gamache (CFA’94,’00), 100 craft vendors, food, and family activities.
Festival organizers hope to answer questions about our relation with the natural environment, about protecting our natural world, and about how nature can inspire creativity and artistic production.
To cut down on traffic, ArtBeat encourages visitors to ride their bikes to the festival. On Saturday, the festival will offer a secure bike valet so that visitors can park their bikes and enjoy the festivities. There will also be a gallery of unique and artistic bikes, as well as an all-day bike- and helmet-decorating center.
ArtBeat takes place Friday, July 18, beginning at 6 p.m. and all day Saturday, July 19, in Somerville’s Davis Square. For a schedule of events, click here. A $3 donation is requested from visitors.
