Incident reports from the BUPD

This week, Boston University Police Chief Thomas Robbins recommends that students take a minute to lock up before leaving their rooms. “The majority of thefts in dorm rooms and offices occur because the door is unlocked,” Robbins says. “Lock doors and windows whenever you leave, even if it is only for a minute.”

Officer Matthew Blakeslee was dispatched for an intoxicated male in the lobby. Upon arrival, Officer Blakeslee met with ORL Staff, who stated that the security assistant in the lobby contacted him for an intoxicated resident. Officer Blakeslee identified the intoxicated individual who was losing consciousness and unable to communicate or answer questions. A friend of the victim stated that the victim had consumed about eight or ten alcoholic beverages. Mercy General Ambulance #105 transported the victim to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for further evaluation.

Officer Jack Struble observed a party sitting in front of 648 Beacon St. blocking walkers from passing to get out of the building and pedestrians from passing to the MBTA entrance. Having prior knowledge of this individual on several incidents of aggressive solicitation and removing him several times and warning him that he would be cited and he refused to adhere to the warning he was cited for city code violation 16-41.3 on citation 39953.

Officer Jack Struble observed a male party approaching vehicles and placing his cup on the driver side windows of the vehicles that were stopped at the Raleigh Street and Beacon Street intersection. LUNA had been cited previously by Officer Struble for aggressive solicitation in the past. The party was cited in violation of City Code 16-41.3 aggressive solicitation citation number 39952.

Officer William Campanella was flagged down by the victim, who informed him that she was having a panic attack, suffering from depression, had been drinking and had not taken her prescribed medication for depression for several days. The victim further stated that she had called 911 and requested an ambulance so she could go to the hospital for treatment. The victim was very nervous, crying and confused. The victim stated that she had been drinking a large amount of an unknown alcoholic beverage at a party on Ashford Street. Officer Campanella requested Mercy Ambulance be contacted to respond to the scene. Mercy Ambulance #65 responded to the scene and transported the victim to the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital for further treatment.

Officer William Campanella was dispatched for a report of an intoxicated female. Upon arrival, Officer Campanella met with ORL staff who stated that the victim was in the process of being signed into the building as a guest of a building resident. The victim was unsteady on her feet, staggering and appeared to be intoxicated. Officer Campanella met with the victim, who stated that she had been drinking an undetermined amount of a grape-tasting alcoholic beverage. The building resident stated that the victim was at the same party he was at in the Ashford Street area and that the victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol. Mercy ambulance #105 arrived on the scene, treated the victim and transported the victim to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for further treatment.

Officer Christopher Zengo responded for a report of minors in possession of alcohol. On arrival he met with ORL Staff, who stated that she heard voices inside room 1606B talking about alcohol, which prompted her to knock on the door. The ORL staff member stated that there were numerous females in the room and asked the two females who were residents of the room to turn over any alcohol that was present. The two females produced four bottles of vodka from the freezer. Officer Zengo asked both parties if the alcohol belonged to them and they stated that it did. Officer Zengo took the bottles of alcohol to place into evidence. Complaint forms have been made out.

Officer Kevin St. Ives and Sergeant Dan Healy were dispatched to assist with an intoxicated male party. Upon arrival they observed an unconscious male lying in a chair. The victim was unresponsive to verbal or painful stimuli. Mercy Ambulance was contacted and responded. Parties told security they found the victim asleep outside in the snow. Mercy Ambulance #106 responded and transported the victim to the Beth Israel Hospital.

Officer Scott Rocheville was dispatched for an intoxicated female in the lobby. Upon arrival he observed the victim was barely conscious and vomiting into a wastebasket. Mercy Ambulance #105 arrived on scene and transported the victim to the BMC.

Officer Peter McCarron responded for a report of an intoxicated party. Upon arrival he met the victim who was covered in vomit from head to toe. The victim stated that that his friend vomited on him. The victim was unable to stand up and his speech was slurred. Mercy ambulance arrived and evaluated the victim and transported him to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for further medical treatment.

500 COMMONWEALTH AVE Hotel SIDEWALK
Officer Kevin St. Ives observed a white male being escorted out of a taxi by the driver. Upon getting out of the taxi, the male party immediately fell to the ground and stayed there a minute trying to regain his senses. The suspect tried to enter the hotel and the doorman for the hotel told him that he would not be allowed into the hotel if he wasn’t a guest and was too drunk to enter the bar at the hotel. The suspect immediately started being disruptive in front of various hotel guests and staff. At that time Officer St. Ives was asked to assist with removing the suspect from the area. The suspect was advised by Officer St. Ives he was causing a disturbance and he would need to leave the area. The suspect began yelling and stated he was not going to leave the area. Officer St. Ives attempted to remove the suspect, but he started flailing his arms and trying to get free. The suspect then attempted to strike Officer St. Ives several times in the head and face with a closed fist. The suspect made contact with one strike, grazing Officer St. Ives in the lip, causing a small scratch. Officer St. Ives brought the suspect to the ground and informed him that he was under arrest. Officers Scott Rocheville and Brandon Stone responded to transport the prisoner. After being booked the suspect was to be transported to the Boston Police for safekeeping. The suspect was placed into marked police cruiser 592. The suspect was very uncooperative while being escorted out of the police station and was yelling obscenities at the escorting officers. Sergeant Healy and Officer Stone were able to get the suspect into the cruiser. Sergeant Healy and Officer St. Ives went into the station to retrieve the suspect’s property, while Officer Stone remained outside with the suspect. After a short period of time, Officer Stone radioed that he needed help. When Sergeant Healy and Officer St. Ives responded, they observed the rear passenger window completely smashed out, and Officer Stone was covering his face with his hands. Sergeant Healy and Officer St. Ives took the suspect back inside the station and secured him back into the holding area. Officer Stone reported that he had glass in his eyes. Boston EMS was requested to respond to the station. Officer Stone stated that after the suspect was secured in the cruiser, the suspect said to him, “Are you ready for this?” the suspect swung his body around in the back seat and kicked the rear window twice. Officer Stone was trying to open the rear door on the third and final kick to the window when the suspect smashed the window, sending glass pieces into Officer Stone’s eyes. Officer Stone was transported to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital by Boston EMS. The suspect is charged with Disorderly Conduct, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Assault and Battery with Dangerous Weapon and Malicious Destruction of Property over $250.00.

Officers Ron Gately, Tom Smith and Ciaran D’Arcy were dispatched for a report that rocks were being thrown at the building. Officers observed that one rock did break the outside storm window pane to apartment 302. Officers Smith and Darcy went to 401 Park Drive, Landmark Center parking garage where the reporting person stated the rocks were coming from. The suspects were described as 3 males wearing hooded sweat shirts. No one was injured in the apartment and B&G came and took the broken window to be replaced. The reporting party stated that rocks have thrown at the building several times over the last 3 weeks, but this was the first time anything had been broken. Boston Police was also notified and they did a sweep of the garage as well. No suspects were found. B&G stated the cost to repair the window was about $25.00.

Officer Tom Smith was dispatched for a report of a stolen bicycle. Upon arrival he met with the victim who stated that she locked her bike in front of the building on 2/14/2008 at 5 p.m. and secured it with 2 chains. When she returned on 2/15/2008 at 10 a.m., she discovered her bicycle was missing. The victim reports that her Schwinn Mountain bike was valued at $90.00.

Officer Rick Camillo was dispatched for a past larceny. Upon arrival he met with the victim, who stated sometime between 10:25 a.m. and 10:35 a.m., someone stole her mp3 player, which she had left unattended on a dining table. The victim reports that her Samsung T9 mp3 player was valued at $150.00.

Officers Melissa Lombardo and John Mahoney responded for a report of a past breaking and entering to a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim, who stated that sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., the front passenger window was broken and entered the vehicle. Officers observed that the contents of the vehicle were scattered around the vehicle. The victim stated that nothing was missing from her vehicle.

Officer Joseph Sirignano was dispatched for a past B&E to a motor vehicle. Upon arrival he met with the victim, who stated that at on 2/19/2008 at 7 p.m., he had parked his motor vehicle, in the rear of 14 Buswell Street. When he returned to his vehicle 2/20/2008 at 7:30 a.m., he discovered that the front passenger side window had been broken and his GPS unit was stolen. The victim reports that his Tom Tom 1 LE GPS was valued at $250.00.

Officer Rich Cabral was stopped by the victim of a B&E to their motor vehicle. The victim stated that he parked his vehicle in the rear of 81 Bay State Road on 2/19/2008 at 6:30 p.m. The victim stated he placed his Tom Tom GPS system and iPod inside the glove compartment. When the victim returned to his car on 2/20/2008 at 8:45 p.m., he discovered that the driver’s side window had been broken and stolen the GPS and iPod from the glove compartment. The victim states that the Tom Tom GPS was valued at $500.00 and the iPod was valued at $300.00.

Upon arrival they met with the victim, who stated that her roommate had taken her Banana Republic card and Bank of America credit card. The victim further stated that her roommate had charged $600.00 in merchandise from numerous stores. The victim stated that her roommate had sent text messages to her phone stating that she used her credit cards and purchased merchandise.

Officer William Campanella was dispatched for a report of a B&E to a motor vehicle. Upon arrival he met with the reporting party, who stated that at 2:50 a.m., he heard a motor vehicle alarm. The reporting party went to his window and observed a male party standing next to a 1999 Saab and the vehicle’s front driver’s side window appeared to be smashed out. The reporting party then observed the male party get into the passenger side of a late model Honda or Acura that was parked next to the Saab. The vehicle left the area on Mountfort Street with the vehicle lights out. Officer Campanella went to the vehicle, a 1999 Saab and found that an unknown object had shattered the driver’s side window. It was undetermined at the time of the report if any property had been taken from the vehicle.

Officer William Campanella had responded for a motor vehicle being broken into, (IRC# 8002423), after speaking to the reporting party in that incident. Officer Campanella checked the area of Mountfort Street for any other vehicles that may have been damaged. Officer Campanella discovered a vehicle parked in the rear of Mountfort Street. The vehicle’s passenger front window was broken. It was undetermined if any property was taken from the vehicle at the time of the report.

Officer Ciaran D’Arcy responded for a past larceny. He met with the victim, who stated that her wallet was stolen from her dorm room. The victim report that her wallet was last seen at 12:00 a.m. and noticed it was missing at 10:30 p.m. The victim stated that her roommate had left by 7:30 a.m. The victim further stated that when she woke up her door was unlocked. The victim was sure the door was locked when she went to bed.

Officer Ron Gately was dispatched to meet with the victim of a robbery. Upon arrival he met the victim who stated that he was pulled into a motor vehicle and robbed at knifepoint. The victim stated he was not cut or physically injured. The victim stated that he was on Buswell Street towards St. Mary’s street, when a vehicle pulled up along the parked cars and shouted a profanity at him. The passenger in the back seat of the vehicle exited and grabbed the victim by the collar of his jacket and threw him into the back seat of the vehicle. One of the suspects in the vehicle produced a black handled knife and placed it at the chest off the victim. The suspect was then instructed to empty his pockets. The victim surrendered his wallet, containing $40.00 cash, silver money clip, valued at $20.00, MA driver’s license, BU ID, cell phone, valued at $300.00, Texas Instruments calculator, valued at $100.00 and a backpack. The victim was in the vehicle from about 40 Buswell Street and was released at St Mary’s Street and Beacon Street. The vehicle then fled out bound on Beacon Street into Brookline. The Brookline Police were notified and searched the area.

Officer Ciaran D’Arcy was dispatched for a past larceny report. Upon arrival he met with the victim who stated that his BU ID card had been stolen from the basketball court. The victim reports that he last saw his ID at 6:30 p.m. and discovered it was missing at 7 p.m. The victim stated that his ID card was in his sock while he was playing basketball. He believes that it fell out and someone took it because he had looked for it in the area he was in on the first floor and was unable to locate it.

Officer Jack Struble observed a male party approaching motor vehicles and placing a cup on the driver side window of several vehicles, and sometimes holding motor vehicles from proceeding through the green light. Having prior knowledge of the subject and after asking him several times to stop his aggressive solicitation at this intersection with getting negative results, stopped the subject and issued him a City Ordinance violation.

Officer Ciaran D’Arcy was dispatched for a report of a past larceny of a bicycle. Upon arrival he met with the victim who stated that his mountain bike had been stolen from in front of the building. The bike was secured to a meter with a chain lock. The victim stated that he secured his bike at 12 p.m. and discovered it was missing at 1 p.m. The victim reports that his Specialized Hardrock mountain bike was valued at $450.00.

Officer Jack Struble responded for a report of a past larceny from a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, he met with the victim who stated that the fog lights from his Ford Explorer had been removed, between 2/1/2008 at 8:30 a.m. and 2/5/2008 at 8:30 a.m. while it was parked in the 925 Commonwealth Ave. parking garage. The victim reports that the fog lights were valued at $114.00.

Officer Kevin St. Ives was dispatched for a purse snatching. Upon arrival he met with the victim, who stated that while she was walking inbound on Beacon Street in front of 712 Beacon Street, she felt that someone was following her. When the victim reached the alley between 712 Beacon Street and 700 Beacon Street she stated that a black male wearing a baseball cap grabbed her purse and ran down the alley that runs between Beacon Street and Commonwealth Avenue. The victim followed the suspect for a short period and observed the suspect and another party get into a motor vehicle parked in front of 590 Commonwealth Ave. The victim reports that her Victoria’s Secret purse, valued at $10.00, $40.00 cash, Vera Bradley wallet, valued at $30.00, Bank of America debit card, First Financial Bank Visa card, BU ID and CA driver’s license were missing.

Officer Jack Struble was dispatched for a report of a past larceny. Upon arrival he met with the victim, who stated that her laptop and the black leather tote bag that was holding the laptop were stolen from her former room at 700 Commonwealth Ave. The victim further stated that she and her former roommate have had some issues with missing property in the past (see IRC 8001866), and due to this, the victim was moving to a new residence. The victim states that at 2 p.m. she remembers seeing her black leather tote bag, with her laptop inside in the room. When she returned at 6 p.m., she discovered her tote bag and computer where both missing. The victim suspects that her former roommate was involved.

Officers Brandon Stone and Matthew Blakeslee were dispatched for report of an unwanted male. Upon arrival, they met with the victim, who stated that at 3:50 a.m., she awoke to an unknown black male standing above her bed staring at her. The victim further stated that when she awoke to the suspect standing above her, she sat up in bed and screamed. The suspect then, according to the victim, reached over and grabbed her by the left arm firmly. As she continued to scream, the suspect grabbed her by the same arm with his other hand which also was holding one of the victim’s shirts from her closet. At this time, the victim’s roommate awoke to the victim running out of the door to the room screaming behind the suspect. The victim stated that the suspect ran down the stairs and out of the front door. The suspect dropped the victim’s shirt as he fled the room. Officer Stone observed that the victim’s arm was visibly red from being grabbed. The victim further advised that the suspect was not wearing any gloves, and did not say anything to her during the entire incident. The victim stated that prior to this incident the shirt that the suspect had in his hand was located in her hamper in the closet. The victim and her roommate stated that there is no property missing to their knowledge.

Officer Kevin St. Ives was approached by a female party who claimed she was the victim of a larceny. The victim stated that while in the area of 710 Commonwealth Avenue she put her wallet in her pocket, which she believes may have fallen out of her pocket in that area. She returned to the area, but her wallet was gone a few minutes after she realized she dropped it. The victim reports that her Coach wallet, valued at $50.00, $40.00 cash, American Express card, Bank of America debit card and CA driver’s license were missing.

Officer Matthew Blakeslee responded for a past larceny by an individual who arrived to retrieve her found wallet. Upon arrival, he met with the victim who stated that she was last in possession of her wallet at 1:50 a.m. while paying for a taxicab at 830 Beacon Street, and may have left it in the cab. At 3:30 a.m., a taxi driver from Ambassador Cab, Cambridge Medallion 108 arrived at the station to turn in property he stated was left in the back of his cab. The driver was on duty at that time accepting fares and did have a fare in his vehicle. The victim reports that $79.00 cash and a personal check, written in her name in an amount not exceeding $30.00 were in the wallet.

Officers Brandon Stone and William Donnellan observed a male party fully exposing his genitals and urinating on the sidewalk on the Brookline side of St. Mary’s Street. During this time that the individual was urinating, a female pedestrian was walking in close proximity to the suspect, and the area was busy with vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The officers stopped the party, who appeared to be intoxicated. The subject was the placed under arrest for indecent exposure and transported to the station for booking.

Officer Richard Cabral was dispatched for a past larceny report. Upon arrival he spoke with the victim, who stated that at 4:30 p.m. she arrived at the Agganis Arena to work and placed her personal items inside a locker in a coed locker room. The victim further stated that she did not secure her property in the locker. When the victim returned at 10:30 p.m. she discovered that $32.00 cash was missing from her wallet. The victim reports that nothing else was taken.

Officers Dan Digiovine and Matthew Bouras were for a report of a party who exposed himself to a female. Officers were given a suspect description and near 575 Commonwealth Ave. observed a male party fitting the suspect description. Officers approached and conducted a stop on the party, in front of 595 Commonwealth Ave. The subject was informed for reason of the stop and complied when asked for identification. Officers Richard Cabral and Matt Quinlan brought the victim from Bay State Road and the victim positively identified the subject as the male who exposed his genitals to her in front of 153 Bay State Road. The subject was then placed under arrest for Open and Gross Lewdness and transported to station and booked.

Officer John Mahoney responded a report of Tagging. Upon arrival he met with security officer Robert Gray, who stated that inside the bathroom of the Café at 10 Buick Street he discovered graffiti on the wall. Officer Mahoney proceeded to the men’s bathroom and observed on the stall wall inside of the bathroom, markings made with a black marker that were not legible.

Officer Jacob Verge was parked in the area of 540 Commonwealth Ave. when he observed a male party, walking down Brookline Avenue yelling into a large traffic cone to project his voice. As the suspect approached Officer Verge’s cruiser, Officer Verge stopped the suspect and asked him if he could stop yelling and to put the cone down. The suspect stated that he had every right to be yelling and using the cone. Officer Verge stated to the suspect that he was being disruptive and causing alarm to the other people in the area. At this point the suspect took out his cell phone and stated to Officer Verge, “I am recording your picture and voice”. Officer Verge advised the suspect on numerous times to move along and leave the area. The suspect proceeded to pick up the traffic cone and yell very loudly. When Officer Verge approached the suspect, he began running inbound on Commonwealth Avenue causing other pedestrians to move out of his way. The suspect proceeded to run inside the 7-Eleven convenience store and when Officer Verge entered the store he observed the suspect standing in front of the counter flailing his arms and yelling. The suspect’s behavior prompted patrons of the store to move out of the line and distance themselves from the suspect. The suspect began yelling at Officer Verge. Detail Officers Scott Rocheville and William Campanella arrived on scene and assisted Officer Verge take the suspect into custody. The suspect was charge with Disorderly Person.

Sergeant Robert Casey was dispatched for an intoxicated female having problems entering into the building. Upon arrival he met the victim who was sitting on a couch in the lobby of the 4th floor, with ORL staff. The victim had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and her speech was somewhat slurred. The victim indicated she wished to contact her father who lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. Sergeant Casey spoke with her father who was on the way to their location. The victim’s father arrived before the ambulance and stated that he would take custody of his daughter. All units cleared from the call without further incident.

Officer William Campanella was dispatched to the 8th floor, east tower, men’s room, in reference to an intoxicated male vomiting at that location. Upon arrival, Officer Campanella met with the victim, who stated that he had been consuming a large amount of beer in his room. After doing so, the victim stated that he became very sick and started to vomit. Mercy Ambulance was contacted and ambulance #102 arrived on the scene, treated the victim and transported the victim to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Officer Matt Quinlan was dispatched for a report of an unwanted person in the City Convenience store. Upon arrival he met with the store clerk who stated that a customer that she has had problems with in the past stole a 4-dollar block of cheese. The individual is reportedly homeless and always verbally abuses the clerk. The individual is described as a light-skinned black male about 50 years of age. He has a thin build and was wearing a brown coat and a blue hat and left in unknown direction.

Officer Joseph Sirignano responded for a past larceny report. Upon arrival he met with the victim. The victim stated that on 12/28/2007 between 12 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., she was on the third floor of the Mugar library. During this time she kept her wallet in her backpack. The victim further states she left her backpack unattended on several occasions. At 4 p.m. she went to retrieve her wallet from her backpack and found that the wallet had been removed. The victim reports that someone has used her Bank of America Visa card to make several fraudulent purchases. The victim reports that her wallet, valued at $40.00, $20.00 cash, Bank of America debit card, Chinese Bank Visa card, BU ID and a Charlie card were stolen.

Officer Larry Mackin was dispatched for a report of a past larceny. Upon arrival he met the reporting party, who stated that at 2:30 p.m. he went to a Knack toolbox that was located in the basement to get a tool. At this time the victim observed that the toolbox which had been locked and chained to a floor post was missing. Also missing were the chain and lock. The reporting party could not provide a list of the missing tools at this time. The reporting party stated that the toolbox was valued at $200.00.

Officers Rick Camillo and Jack Struble responded for a larceny that involved detainment and extortion. Upon arrival they met with the victim, who stated that at 1:29 PM she went to meet with her friend to discuss an ongoing riff with one of her roommates. When she entered the room she stated she was met by her friend and the suspect. At this time her friend closed the door and stood in front of it. The victim stated that at this time the suspect walked up to the victim and began yelling in her face stating that she had taken the victim’s Apple laptop computer and her sentimental blanket and that if she didn’t pay her the money she owed her from a failed vacation plan she would never get them back. The victim stated that while the suspect was yelling at her she attempted to leave but the other female stepped in front of her and blocked the door and refused to get out of the way. The victim stated that after attempting to leave the suspect approached her and attempted to slap her but the other female stepped in between and blocked the assault. Victim stated she was then allowed to leave the room. The victim stated that she was concerned and somewhat fearful, went to her bank and withdrew $625.00 from her savings account to pay the suspect for her property but before returning, stated she contacted her father about the incident, he in turn instructed her to contact the Boston University Police. Officers informed the victim and her father (via cell phone) of their options both criminally and through the Boston University Administration in pursuing this incident. The victim stated she did not feel comfortable taking criminal action at this time and that if she was able to retrieve her property and have her residence relocated she would prefer to have the matter handled through Boston University. Officers and the victim went to the room and met with the suspect and instructed her turn over the victim’s property. The suspect retrieved the victim’s black Apple laptop.

Officer William Donnellan was dispatched for a past larceny report. Upon arrival, he met with the victim, who stated that between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. she lost her olive raincoat containing an iPod Touch on the bench in front of the building. She contacted the building manager’s office and was told they had recovered her coat. When she went to pick up the coat it was stolen from the manager’s office. The victim reports that that her iPod Touch was valued at $400.00.
