About Tomorrow Night
Tomorrow through Saturday, Stage Troupe performs David Mamet’s take on the dating world, Sexual Perversity in Chicago
Put the zing back into your banter this week with a dose of David Mamet, courtesy of Stage Troupe, Boston University’s oldest performing arts group for nontheater majors. This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the group will be staging Mamet’s one-act exploration of the dating world, Sexual Perversity in Chicago. The play, written in 1974, is a black comedy about love, sex, and cynicism. In 1986, it was adapted for the big screen in About Last Night, starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore.
“It’s a very simple story, but Mamet is very honest in his portrayal of this couple, and that really struck a chord with me,” says Andrew Hoglund (CAS’08), who is directing the production along with Bryan Lowry (CAS’08). “I identified with the male character and his self-destructive tendencies. All these characters are unlikable in their own way, but you still connect to them, because they’re human.” In addition, Hoglund says, he loves the play for its pure wit. “Mamet is really the godfather of punchy, quick dialogue that really comes alive,” he says.
Stage Troupe’s production of David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago will be staged March 20, 21, and 22 at 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Avenue. Tickets can be purchased for $6 at the door or, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, downstairs at the George Sherman Union.
