Readings to Go: David Ferry

The award-winning poet reads his translations and poetry

In the video above, award-winning translator and poet David Ferry, a College of Arts and Sciences lecturer in creative writing, reads from his recent work.

Ferry has written several books of poetry and translation, including the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize–winning Of No Country I Know: New and Selected Poems and Translations, The Eclogues of Virgil, The Odes of Horace: A Translation, Dwelling Places: Poems and Translations, Gilgamesh: A New Rendering in English Verse, Strangers: A Book of Poems, On the Way to the Island, and The Limits of Mortality: An Essay on Wordsworth’s Major Poems. Ferry’s awards include the Sixtieth Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, the Teasdale Prize for Poetry, and a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. In 1998 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Ferry was one of seven faculty members to read from their works at the annual Faculty Reading on January 30, 2007. Sponsored by BU’s Creative Writing Program, the event included readings by Leslie Epstein, a CAS professor and director of the Creative Writing Program; Robert Pinsky, a CAS professor of English and three-time U.S. poet laureate; Jennifer Haigh, a CAS lecturer in creative writing and a PEN/Hemingway and PEN/Winship award winner; Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Louise Glück, a CAS lecturer in creative writing and another former U.S. poet laureate; Ha Jin (GRS’94), a CAS professor of creative writing and winner of a National Book Award, two PEN/Faulkner Awards, and a PEN/Hemingway Award; and poet, scholar, and translator Rosanna Warren, a University Professor and BU’s Emma Ann MacLachlan Metcalf Professor of the Humanities.
