From Grad Student to Commissioner
Sharon Gillett was appointed commissioner of the state's telecommunications and cable department.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick recently appointed Sharon E. Gillett, a doctoral candidate in BU’s Graduate School of Management, commissioner of the state’s recently formed Department of Telecommunications and Cable.
As a researcher and consultant, Gillett has worked for more than 10 years on telecommunications, cable, and Internet issues. She advised Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (Hon.’01) on broadband issues as a member of the Boston Wireless Task Force.
“This situation presented a novel opportunity for a graduate student,” says Gillett, a student in information systems. “I’m grateful to the School of Management, and in particular, Professor Paul Carlile, for being incredibly supportive and enabling me to resume my studies in a few years.”
Gillett earned a bachelor’s in physics from Harvard College and an M.S. in technology and policy and an M.B.A., both from MIT. She plans to finish her studies at BU after being commissioner.
