Bruce Schulman, a College of Arts and Sciences professor of American history, received the Nancy Lyman Roelker Mentorship Award at the January meeting of the American Historical Association. The award, named for a former Boston University professor of modern French history, honors history teachers who have taught, guided, and inspired their students in a way that changed their lives. Both high school teachers and college faculty are eligible for the award.

Schulman, who has taught at BU since 1994, is widely praised as a gifted lecturer and a supportive mentor. Many of his former students have obtained tenure or tenure-track positions in academia. His books include From Cotton Belt to Sunbelt: Federal Policy, Economic Development, and the Transformation of the South, 1938–1980, and The Seventies: The Great Shift in American Culture, Politics, and Society.
