Clinical Experiences in Dental Public Health

This course supports the mission and goals of the BUSDM Dental Public Health Program and suppports four of the 10 DPH competencies. It also directly addresses Standard 4-9 of the Accreditation Standards for Advanced Dental Education Programs in Dental Public Health The goal of this course is to facilitate the development of Dental Public Health residents’ knowledge in the delivery of oral healthcare services and the provision of clinical care in settings that focus on underserved and vulnerable populations. Experiences are supervised clinical provision of oral health care that offer the opportunity for students/residents to enhance their understanding and appreciation of dental care for underserved and/or vulnerable populations. Clinical facilities will include but are not limited to Community Health Centers, schools, clinics that care for vulnerable populations, such as low-income children, persons living with HIV, the homeless, and those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Additionally, all students will rotate through the BUGSDM clinic under the supervision of the Operative Dentistry faculty as to facilitate enhancement of clinical skills. All care will be provided under the supervision of the preceptor or designated attending dentists at the designated sites. Initially, the preceptor will evaluate the resident’s capabilities determining the amount of guidance they require to provide clinical care to the patients assigned to them. Residents will be encouraged to work independently and will be assigned more complex cases as the rotation progresses, increasing their efficiency, speed and gaining confidence in making clinical decisions
