In this immersive week-long trip over spring break, students travel to U.S. cities to learn about and reflect on the long Black Freedom Movement. By engaging with sites, local activists, artists, archivists, and historians, students delve into the histories of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr. and probe the ethical questions both leaders faced as symbols of a larger social justice movement. Students participate in pre-trip meetings and complete reflection assignments and a digital portfolio. Sponsored by the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground in partnership with faculty from History and African American & Black Diaspora Studies. Effective Spring 2026, this course fulfills a single requirement in the following BU HUB area: Ethical Reasoning.
