BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Required Courses

• MED MD 599: Research Elective in Biomedical Science
  The M4 Research Elective allows fourth-year medical students to undertake 4, 8, or 12 weeks of research for credit after approval of their application by the review committee. While many students will choose to work with BU faculty mentors, students may participate in research with non-BU faculty at other institutions. Students work as part of a team to build research skills, including study development, data collection, statistical analysis, and preparing publications. At the end of the Elective, each student submits a project summary and is evaluated by their research mentor. Students may use the time to continue research projects started earlier in their training.
• MED MD 600: PhD Research
  Students completing a dual MD/PhD degree may elect to continue work on an existing research project associated with their PhD for credit in the 4th year. Students continue this work under the supervision of their PhD supervisors.
• MED MD 650: Advanced Acute Care and Trauma Surgery
  The Advanced Trauma and Acute Care surgery elective at Boston Medical Center is a clinical program with a strong focus on management of acute general surgical disease and the multimodal and multidisciplinary management of traumatic injury. The elective is four weeks in duration and is designed to further develop the complex peri-, intra-, and post-operative decision making and basic open and laparoscopic surgical skills of the medical student who might be interested in a future career in trauma surgery. This is an Advanced Course that can only be taken following completion of the Acute Care and Trauma Surgery Sub-internship. The BU medical student will be able to expand their responsibilities under direct supervision and develop their own learning objectives to focus their interests throughout the rotation.
• MED MD 900: BU Research Year
  The Research Year and Half-Year (1 semester) Programs are for BU medical students interested in taking a year off from the medical curriculum to pursue full-time research with a BU faculty member. Students accepted into this program will remain registered and enroll for fall and spring semesters (full year) or 1 semester (half year). Students will receive a scholarship to pay for research tuition costs. • MED MD 901: Research Semester
  Students may choose to take an elective research semester between the second and third years or third and fourth years of the curriculum.
