Scholarly, Research, and/or Practice Interests
Karen Jacobs’ research and scholarly pursuits examine the interface between the environment and human capabilities. In particular, she is investigating the individual factors and environmental demands associated with increased risk of functional limitations among populations of university and middle school aged students, particularly in notebook computing, the use of iPads, wearing backpacks, and using telehealth technologies to deliver occupational therapy services. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC), and the Harvard-NIOSH Education and Research Center as well as gifts from Hewlett Packard and Microsoft.
Jacobs is the founding editor of the interdisciplinary, international journal Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment, and Rehabilitation. She has published and presented widely on the topics of ergonomics and marketing. She is the author of Ergonomics for Therapists and Occupational Therapy: Work-Related Programs and Assessments; coeditor of Quick Reference Dictionary for Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapy Essentials for Clinical Competence, and AOTA’s OT Manager (5th edition). Jacobs is the past-president and vice-president of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE). She is a 2005 recipient of The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship, the 2009 recipient of the Award of Merit from the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), the Award of Merit from the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2003, and the 2011 Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award from AOTA. In addition, she is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and the International Ergonomics Association (IEA).
Current Projects
Working from Home and Well-being: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Research Approach
This six-month study focuses on mapping remote workers’ environment and their impact on physical and mental well-being. As some of the data collected is submitted by participants, it is crucial to collect at the moment to avoid memory bias. The use of the Ecological Momentary Assessment app (mEMA) allowed for ecologically valid raw data, as the phone sensors and wearable Garmin watch were used to provide frequent in-the-moment sampling. With their consent, participant movements are tracked, and they will also be prompted on their phone and Garmin watch to report their physical and mental health levels. This is especially critical for stress monitoring, as the mEMA app will provide the researchers with both physiological data (e.g. participant heart rates and movement patterns) and reported stress levels at the moment. This longitudinal data will inform ergonomic recommendations related to breaks and posture variation and suggest implementation strategies via videoconferencing for virtual office workers. This study is supported by a grant from the Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC).
Interprofessional Leadership in Healthcare Certificate using an Alumni Mentor Approach
A five-month, fully online program is for health professionals who lead, or aspire to lead, interprofessional teams. Quantitative data analysis of the pilot delivery of the certificate with 30 health care professionals demonstrated participants’ knowledge and skill acquisition through participation in the certificate, as well as six-month follow up data. Qualitative data demonstrated the impact of the certificate on participants’ leadership and collaborative practices in their own clinical settings. The Interprofessional Leadership in Healthcare Certificate was created to address the need to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively lead interprofessional teams. This initiative is supported by a grant from Shipley Center (formerly DL&I)

SAR OT513: Analysis and Adaptation of Occupation
Undergraduate Prerequisites: OTD students only - This course will introduce students to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain & Process (OTPF) 3rd edition (AOTA, 2014), an official document for the profession. Through lecture and participatory activities, students will investigate aspects of the domain of occupational therapy and "achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation" (AOTA, pg. S4). Employing logical thinking, critical analysis, problem solving, and creativity students will learn how to analyze and adapt occupations and activities. Students will be able to explain the meaning and dynamics of occupation and activity, including the interaction of areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, activity demands, context(s), and client factors. Through community service projects, students will articulate to clients and the general public the distinct value of occupation to support participation. Using small team presentations, students will gain an understanding of the importance of the historical and philosophical base of occupational therapy. (Credits: 4)
SAR OT586: Professional Service Management
Graduate Prerequisites: OT502, OT538, OT563, OT564, OT621; MSOT and OTD students only. - This required graduate course provides a fundamental, critical overview of health care management principles. Detailed discussions, teamwork, practical case study experiences, as well as oral and written assignments will guide the soon-to-be entry-level occupational therapist to effectively manage people and resources, and to understand political, regulatory, economic, and social forces that are affecting a constantly changing and often complex health and rehabilitation environment. Major emphasis is on advocacy and legislation, reimbursement, financial planning, personnel management, leadership, negotiation skills, conflict resolution, ethics, grant writing, starting up a new program, business or practice, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Post-professional OTD courses
SAR OT911: Practicum in Social Policy and Disability
Graduate Prerequisites: OTD degree students only. - This on-line graduate course engages students in the critical analysis of policy and disability theory in their major area of practice (e.g., ergonomics, medical rehabilitation, early intervention, mental health services). They must complete critical reviews of additional reading related to their specific field of application as well as a sequence of analyses of the impact of relevant policies on resource allocations, service delivery methods, and reimbursement. SAR OT925: Capstone
Graduate Prerequisites: OTD degree students only. This on-line graduate Capstone course is the final course in the post-professional OTD program. Students will prepare for and deliver a 30-minute presentation on their doctoral project to an invited audience of colleagues, family, and friends. After receiving feedback from their presentation, students will prepare a final version of their doctoral paper, which will be indexed in the Boston University Mugar Library. (Credits: 3)
SAR OT930: Doctoral Project
Graduate Prerequisites: OTD degree students only. This is an on-line graduate course in the post-professional OTD program. Concurrent with each full semester (fall, spring, summer) in the OTD program, students register for one credit of the Doctoral Project. In the fourth semester of the program, students register for 3 credits of the Doctoral Project course. The Doctoral Project is organized around the student's proposed innovation in practice. It is in the form of a series of qualifying tasks, each of which represents a critical phase of the proposal. Guidance in the doctoral project will be through a combination of three elements: Faculty advising and mentorship, peer mentorship and a circle of Advisors composed of a minimum of two professionals with content expertise in the doctoral project. The project outcomes include: description of a short-coming, gap or specific need in the student's area of practice; compilation of a theoretical and evidence base to support the proposed project; description of the proposed program; evaluation plan; funding plan; dissemination plan; executive summary and Fact Sheet.
