Grant Writing

Part of the requirements for the research project for Research Track fellows is development of a grant proposal based on a research project. Fellows have two sessions on grant writing in the Academic Seminar series. By the beginning of the second year of fellowship, Research Track fellows meet with their mentor to decide on which project to base a grant proposal. Then the trainee, under the guidance of the research supervisor, writes a grant proposal. Ideally, the fellows will write a proposal that is submitted for funding (ideally for a K award), but that is not a requirement. One of the 2002 graduating fellows secured a K award shortly after graduation based on the grant proposal he wrote during his fellowship. The principal purpose, however, of the grant writing exercise is to familiarize fellows with the grant-writing process under the supervision of faculty who have experience in obtaining grant funding.
