The Chemistry Research Addressing Biological Problems program gives undergraduates the opportunity to conduct research in basic chemical science projects that address fundamental questions in biological systems.  The program is offered by the Department of Chemistry at Boston University and is one of the sites supported by the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). The Department of Chemistry has an outstanding, internationally known faculty and exceptional, modern facilities. It is located in the heart Boston, one of the world’s leading research areas.

Students from outside Boston University who are completing the freshman, sophomore, or junior year, including students in two-year community colleges, are eligible for this exciting ten-week mentored research experience. Students will receive a stipend, free on-campus housing, and a laboratory budget.  Travel assistance is also available.

The REU projects are interdisciplinary and range across the traditional chemistry disciplines (theoretical, physical, inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry), as well as biology and physics.

REU Highlights

  • Conduct laboratory research at the interface of chemistry/biology
  • Train on state-of-the-art instrumentation
  • Attend seminars on latest chemical/biology interface concepts
  • Weekly REU workshops and laboratory group meetings that describe how students' projects are effective in solving biological problems
  • Gain experience in presentation/communication skills
  • Opportunity to present work at a University-wide research symposium at the end of the summer research session
