Scholarships are awarded to seniors, graduate students, and alumni who are 26 or younger (35 if you wish to read business studies) and are citizens of the United States. A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7 is required. Recipients receive funds to cover tuition, room, board, books, travel, and expenses. A supplemental grant is available towards the support of a dependent spouse. Internal BU deadline:September 4, 2009
Harold C. Case Scholarships are offered to outstanding Boston University juniors. Harold C. Case Scholarships recognize scholarly accomplishment and potential, as well as extra curricular activities which contribute to the University. Scholarship recipients receive between $1000.00 and full tuition depending on financial need. Funds can only be applied to undergraduate study. Deadline: February 12, 2010.
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Fellowships provide opportunities for students who desire careers in international affairs to have a substantive one-year working experience in Washington, D.C. Junior Fellows provide research assistance to Associates working on the Endowment's projects on non-proliferation, democracy, international economics, immigration, and research on regional areas in virtually all parts of the world. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarships award over 40 scholarships to seniors or recent graduates planning to attend graduate school in fall 2010. Each award will cover a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student is $50,000 per year and the maximum length is six years. Students interested in this scholarship must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their institution. Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst ("DAAD") Annual Grant Program offers annual grants to highly qualified advanced graduate students for study and/or research at universities or institutes in Germany. Applicants must be proficient in German (proficiency requirements are less stringent for applicants in the sciences or engineering). Applicants in all fields except dentistry and medicine who are citizens of the United States or are foreign nationals who have studied at Boston University for more than one year are eligible to apply. The grant provides: a full scholarship for ten months, a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare, insurance, and shipping of personal effects. Internal BU deadline: September 11, 2009.
Fulbright Grants (U.S. Student Program) are for graduate study or research abroad. Grants are awarded to seniors and graduate students in all academic fields and in the creative and performing arts who are citizens of the United States. One year English teaching assistantships are also available. Fulbright full grants provide: round-trip airfare, language or orientation courses (where appropriate), tuition (in some cases), book and research allowances, maintenance for the academic year, supplemental health and accident insurance, and, in some cases, funds for spousal support. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are for sophomores and juniors studying and planning a research career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Sophomore scholarship recipients receive $14,000 and junior scholarship recipients receive $7,000 towards expenses for tuition, fees, books, room, and board. Internal BU deadline:December 4, 2009.
Luce Scholars Program provides year-long internships in Asia. Scholarships are awarded to seniors, graduate students, and alumni under the age of 30 who are citizens of the United States with clearly defined career interests. The scholarship is open to applicants in any field of study. It is not, however, granted to applicants with extensive backgrounds in Asian studies. Scholarships provide: a significant monthly stipend, a cost of living and housing allowance (where necessary), round-trip airfare, air freight, and insurance. Internal BU deadline: October 9, 2009.
James Madison Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for graduate study that focuses on the Constitution -- its history and contemporary relevance to the practices and policies of democratic government. Junior Fellowships are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have recently completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. Senior Fellowships are awarded to experienced teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis through summer and evening classes. Dean Elsbeth Melville Scholarships are awarded to two female juniors each year in recognition of scholarly excellence, high moral character and integrity, contribution to university life, and potential for success in their chosen fields. Scholarship recipients receive between $1000.00 and full tuition depending on financial need. Funds can only be applied to undergraduate study. Deadline: February 12, 2010.
Merage Foundation for the American Dream Fellowships are awarded to exceptional immigrant students.The Foundation selects Fellows based on their academic record, their leadership, their consistent ethical behavior, the clarity of their American Dream, and their potential to contribute importantly to America. Merage Fellows receive two-year stipends of $20,000 ($10,000 each year) to help them pursue their American Dream. The Foundation also provides Merage Fellows with strategic access to mentors and leaders in their chosen careers. Internal BU deadline: November 20, 2009.
George J. Mitchell Scholarships allow students who are U.S. citizens, aged eighteen or over but not yet thirty, to pursue one year of graduate study in any field at universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Prospective scholars must have a demonstrated record of intellectual distinction, leadership, and extra-curricular activity, as well as personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, fairness, and unselfish service to others, which indicate a potential for future leadership and contribution to society. Scholarship recipients receive tuition, room, airfare to and from Ireland, travel expenses, and an $11,000 stipend. Internal BU deadline: September 4, 2009.
The National Security Education Program David L. Boren Fellowshipssupport students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions which are critical to U.S. national security, but which are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students (i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. NSEP David L. Boren fellowship awards are made for a minimum of one academic semester and a maximum of 24 months. The basic grant for domestic language or area study is $2,000 per semester. The maximum award is $10,000 per semester for overseas study for up to two semesters ($20,000).Deadline: January 14, 2010.
The National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarshipssupport study abroad in all regions or countries except Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The focus of NSEP is on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. NSEP David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide up to $10,000 for a semester-long study abroad program and up to $20,000 for a year-long study abroad program. Internal BU deadline: January 14, 2010.
Rhodes Scholarships cover two or three years of study at Oxford University. Scholarships are awarded to seniors, graduate students, and alumni between the ages of 18 and 25. Candidates must be citizens of one of the following countries or regions: Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Commonwealth Caribbean, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, United States, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Saint Andrew's Society Scholarships provide $20,000 for one year of graduate study at a Scottish university. Senior undergraduate students who can prove some Scottish descent and will obtain a Bachelor's degree from Boston University by June 1st of their senior year are eligible to apply. Candidates who have not previously studied in the United Kingdom and who reside within 250 miles of New York City are preferred. Internal BU deadline: October 9, 2009.
Harry S. Truman Scholarships are for juniors committed to a career in public policy or public service. Candidates must be United States citizens or nationals and have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Recipients receive $30,000 ($3,000 for their senior year and $27,000 for graduate school) and preferential admission to leading graduate schools. Internal BU deadline: December 4, 2009.
Morris K. Udall Scholarships are for sophomores and juniors pursuing careers in environmental public policy and for Native American or Alaska Native sophomores and juniors pursuing careers in health care or tribal public policy. Recipients receive $5,000 towards expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board for one year. Internal BU deadline: February 5, 2010.
Wykeham Studentships provide a unique opportunity for a Boston University senior who qualifies to teach for a year at a prestigious boys' school in Winchester, England in the 2010-11 academic year. This is called the "Wykeham Studentship." The position, which is open to men and women, pays twenty thousands pounds sterling a year, plus board and accommodation in the college and a ticket home.
