BU and City of Boston joint MLK Day Celebration

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (right) met briefly with Kenneth Elmore (Wheelock’87), former dean of students and associate provost, and Katherine Kennedy, former director of BU’s Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground, before the start of the University’s MLK Day celebration, January 16, at the George Sherman Union. The annual event, honoring civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59) and his wife, Coretta Scott King, was cohosted by the city of Boston and the New England Conservatory of Music, Coretta Scott’s alma mater. In addition to Mayor Wu, other speakers included Jason Campbell-Foster, BU’s interim associate provost and dean of students, Nick Bates, interim director of the Howard Thurman Center, and Derrick Williams, professor of communication studies at Ohio’s Cuyahoga Community College.
