Campus Health Is Community Health Rally

The BU PhD Student Coalition held a Campus Health Is Community Health rally, titled Protest from Anywhere, on Comm Ave and via Zoom August 13 to call attention to its three goals: “free PPE for all BU students, faculty, and staff—to protect everyone; de-densify campus—to reduce the likelihood of transmission; and free COVID-19 testing for the neighboring communities put at risk without consultation or consent.” People joined the 2:30 pm rally on foot, on bicycles, in cars, and online. Let’s face it, BU is absolutely not prepared for opening in a few weeks. Our facilities are not ready for pandemics, faculty are justifiably afraid (if you dealt with this incompetent administration for years, how can you trust it). There are quasi fixes visible everywhere, masking years of incompetent management and poor planning. From parking fiascos at BUMC, poor sanitation, poor ventilation to limited PPE. Good luck to us all. I would not count on any help or compassion from the leadership, as the only thing they are interested in now is escalation of commitment and profits to justify their existence.

As an alum of BU and part of a BU family, I was proud to see the videos of students, faculty and staff who want to make BU a safer place. Remote work is very much the right thing to do now.

I am proud to say I was one of the numerous BU professors at the protest yesterday, supporting our righteous, brave graduate students. I’m very glad they organized this event.
