  1. This is SO fascinating !! I actually didn’t know the history of Nickerson Field. I can’t believe what is used to be! The history of this place is amazing. There is no place like Boston!!!

  2. Americans historically tried to make Native Americans assimilate, destroyed aspects of their cultures, and put them on reservations. THEN, we put an Indian on the nickel, played “Hail to the Chief” for our president, erected (in Boston) a statue of a “noble savage” in front of the art museum, and founded a ball club called “The Braves”, which played of course in a park called the “wigwam”. No doubt the non-Native players “squaws” and “little papooses” were cheering in the stands.

  3. I appreciate this wonderful history of the game of baseball and how the size and proximity to a railroad shaped the future of the Boston home team!

  4. I am one of many still living related to James Gaffney. Don’t believe for a moment that the naming of his baseball team “the braves” had anything to do with Native Americans. Good on you great great uncle for all that you gave to American baseball! An Irishman,a New Yorker, a businessman, and no doubt would have been a ball to have a beer with!!

  5. I have a baseball signed by most of players of 1947 Braves. Quite faded but could identify many names when I checked site on Google. We are baseball fans and this information is so wonderful. Loved looking at it.
