IS&T will be replacing telephones on the Charles River campus with new Cisco phones as part of a Boston University initiative to modernize services. The project involves over 11,000 phone lines and will take about 18 months to complete with an anticipated end date of July 2017. Conversion will be done on a per building basis with scheduling contingent on the wired data network refresh.
The new phones will utilize the same network that connects your computers today. In fact, it will likely plug directly into the jack currently being used by your computer, and your computer will then plug into the phone for its network connectivity.
Telephone functions will be replicated based on how your phone is set up to work today. Communication Services staff will visit each site to review floor plans and assess telephone needs.
During the conversion process, new phones will be placed alongside your old phone for about one week. You will continue to receive calls on your old phone and until the final conversion occurs.
Training classes will be available throughout the project with sign-up in the BU Training Portal
As the conversion process progresses, you will receive emails directly from the Project Team informing you of key activities. Please feel free to contact them at ipphone@bu.edu if you have any questions. Visit the Boston University Telephone Replacement landing page for a preview of the new telephone.
