Many BUworks users have asked me “what training do I need in order to understand how to use BUworks to help me do my job?” The answer is contained in the Training Path Grid. The Training Team put this table together to map the list of instructor-led training sessions we offer against commonly-held business roles, indicating which sessions are recommended and which are optional.
Looking at the Grid below (click on the image to enlarge it), we see, for example, that an employee with the Shopper role has four training sessions recommended, with another four identified as optional.
The Grid is something that managers, in particular, should be aware of. When you hire new employees, be sure to browse the Grid to help you identify the training those new hires will need. Additionally, this Overview of BUworks Training web page is a great source of information for anyone, manager or otherwise.
I hope this helps and, as always, I hope you find this issue of the Newsletter informative. Do you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me via email.

After a brief summer respite, intermediate-level training is returning this month. Sessions for financial and grants administrators are available now for registration. Check the Training Calendar section of the newsletter below. An additional intermediate-level lab, this one for Sourcing & Procurement reporting, will be rolled out in the fall when the revised/new SRM reports are available.
Some of these Tips may be new to you, while others may be familiar. Regardless, we hope you find value in these and future Tips, even if we do no more than remind you of the existence of tools you once knew about but had since forgotten.
Note: all of the Tips posted in our newsletters are archived on this page.
Identifying ISR and FSR Activity in a Funds Management Report
Goods or services provided by vendors internal to Boston University are procured via Internal Service Requests (ISRs) or Facilities Service Requests (FSRs). This Help Guide provides a step-by-step look at how to filter data in the Funds Management Transaction Detail to allow you to focus solely on ISR/FSR activity.
Build a Split Distribution Report
If you’re a Payroll Coordinator or a manager, you may have wished for a report that allows you to see both payment amounts and the split percentage represented by those amounts for all the employees in your organization. No report is specifically designed to provide this information, but you can modify an existing report to show you what you need.
Starting with the Labor Distributions Payroll Inquiry by Employee (PA15) report, the Help document BW How to – Build a Split Distribution Report describes the steps required to generate percentage amounts. In the example on the left, payment amounts are displayed in the Total Gross columns and the corresponding percentages appear in the Salary columns.
August Training Opportunities
Introductory Workshops offered this month
As always, an assortment of introductory workshops will be offered this month. These sessions present to new employees – or employees assigned a new business role – the fundamentals of reporting for a particular subject area. The sessions are a great way to review material, too. Even if you previously attended an intro session, you are likely to learn new things about reporting – or to be reminded of concepts that you had forgotten.
