Nurses wait for patients outside Boston Medical Center during the early days of the pandemic, March 20, 2020. The staff inside the triage tent assessed patients’ symptoms and determined whether they could receive care through BMC’s influenza-like illness clinic (ILI) for more moderate symptoms, or if they needed to go to the Emergency Department for more serious conditions. The COVID-positive patient census at BMC skyrocketed from 22 patients on March 24, 2020, to 121 patients in just eight days, and reached 219 by April 9.
