About
I am in the Financial Affairs department, which consists of 13 smaller departments, and I work as the Business Administrator for all those teams. I became interested in sustainability in elementary school with a class project to start my town's recycling program and, more recently, when I began avoiding products tested on animals, which naturally led me to shift to more sustainable products and practices. Along with my environmental endeavors at BU, I am working towards a black belt in Taekwondo!
BU Highlights
In my job with Financial Affairs, I’m a bit of a jack of all trades. After initially focusing as an office manager, I thought about what else I could do to better our office. One of the first initiatives I headed was getting Financial Affairs Green Department Certified and our staff Green Office Certified. I also built Financial Affairs’ sustainability website that helps our team stay informed on how to be more environmentally friendly.
I also created and implemented the Financial Affairs Climate Action Plan. In enacting this plan, I calculated all the money Financial Affairs was spending on disposables and other unsustainable products, sparking a shift to reusable items that we provide to every employee, resulting in overall cost savings.
Along with my work in Financial Affairs, I am pursuing a degree in environmental communications, which, as a staff member here at BU, I was able to create.
Advice for BU Students
I think it's important to realize that there's always something more we can do, no matter how small it is. Sustainability isn't about being perfect;it's about doing as many little things as possible that make sense for our lives. I think too many people believe that we are too far gone and that it's too late to make a difference, so they don't bother making any changes, but if we all start making small changes, it'll create a radical shift towards a better future.
