Seminar for Practicum Instructors

Summer 2026-Spring 2027

The Seminar in Field Instruction offers content, feedback, and support to those who are supervising MSW interns for the first time. Experienced field instructors are also welcome to take the seminar on a space-available basis.

Topics include:

  • Getting started with students
  • Using supervisory tools such as the learning contract, process recordings, and evaluation
  • Developing a strong supervisory relationship
  • Assessing the student as a learner
  • The role of the advisor, addressing conflict and problems in supervision and ending the internship
  • Ethics, equity and inclusion,
  • Social policy and human rights as they relate to students’ work in the internship.
  • The seminar uses a mix of discussion, reading, videos and role play building on the field instruction experiences of the participants.

  • Seven modules completed over 14 weeks

  • One-day intensive virtual seminar held on 8/12/26 11AM-5:30PM (EST) (registration deadline 8/4/26)
