Bio

Clinical Associate Professor Dawn Belkin Martinez is a social worker, educator, and trainer with more than 30 years’ experience in family therapy, substance misuse, trauma, liberation health practice with immigrant communities, and popular education. She is committed to growing the movement of radical social work practitioners with a particular focus in liberation health and a social racial justice focused clinical model of social work practice.

Belkin Martinez is co-editor of Social Justice in Clinical Practice: A Liberation Health Framework for Social Work (Routledge, 2014), a technique-based textbook that teaches clinical social workers how to discuss all of the sociopolitical factors affecting clients directly with their clients. She is also a reviewer for Critical and Radical Social Work: An International Journal and one of the founding members of the Boston Liberation Health Group, an organization with more than 1,300 members from across the country.

Belkin Martinez provides training locally, nationally, and internationally about her work with immigrant families, liberation health theory, and integrating a social justice framework into clinical social work practice. At BUSSW, she is spearheading “Assessment of Student Learning and Student Competencies in Social Justice in Social Work,” through a grant from the Office of the Provost.
