BU Today: BUSSW Student Tackles Textile Waste with Sustainable Solution

BU Today featured Maria Gorret Nampiima (STH’26, SSW’26), a dual-degree student from BU School of Social Work and School of Theology, in a story about her innovative pilot program that transforms campus textile waste into community care. Partnering with BU Sustainability, Nampiima helped collect, launder, and donate hundreds of used bedsheets and towels. The effort diverted waste from landfills while providing essential items to local organizations and international students.

With guidance from Sarah Healey, BU’s zero waste manager, and Rebecca Copeland, director of BU’s Faith and Ecological Justice Program, the project has given new purpose to discarded materials while deepening BU’s commitment to sustainability and social impact.

“Many positive things can happen if good, willing people are out there to use their power to make small steps,” Nampiima says.
