Assistant Dean McMahan Joins BU Panel on Developing AI Policies for the Classroom

As faculty across Boston University prepare their courses for fall, one question keeps surfacing: how should classrooms handle AI.

Lyndsey McMahan, assistant dean of teaching and innovation at the Boston University School of Social Work, will join a university-wide panel addressing that question this month.

McMahan will be a featured panelist in “Preparing for the Fall: Developing AI Policies and Assessing Current Materials,” a two-hour session hosted by BU’s Institute for Excellence in Teaching & Learning. The event offers faculty strategies and techniques for revisiting AI policies and course materials ahead of the Fall 2026 semester.

From 2 to 3 p.m., McMahan will join panelists to explore how BU faculty have developed AI policies for their courses and individual assignments. Clear communication sets the tone for a course from day one, and the panel will examine how instructors translate that principle into practice. McMahan will be joined by Jacqueline Hicks of the School of Public Health, Sarah Madsen Hardy of the CAS Writing Program, and Seth Villegas of the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences.

From 3 to 4 p.m., a separate workshop will look at how faculty have used AI in course administration and learning design, featuring Shelley Brown of Sargent College of Health and Human Rehabilitation, MarĂa Datel of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Margaret Wallace of the College of Communication.
