Alum Lee S. Varon (MSW’87) Adds to Children’s Book Oeuvre with “A Kids Book About Overdose”
Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) alum Lee S. Varon, LICSW draws from personal and professional experience in her newest published work, “A Kids Book About Overdose.”
Published by A Kids Co. for children 5-9 years old, the book serves as a resource to support and educate children and caregivers in families dealing with addiction. The book explains how a drug overdose can happen, what it may look like, and what they can do if someone you know experiences an overdose.
Lee S. Varon, a clinical social worker who graduated from BUSSW’s Master of Social Work Program in 1987, worked with families impacted by addiction as a social work practitioner, but it wasn’t until her own child started struggling with substance use that she says her “real education in the field” began. This education included decades of parent education seminars, support groups, and a voracious appetite for topical information. Now that her child is an adult in recovery, Varon is committed to helping other families cope with similar experiences.
A previous book by Varon, titled “My Brother is Not a Monster: A Story of Addiction and Recovery,” was published in 2021. Varon is also an advocate for harm reduction methods like increasing the availability of naloxone, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
