  • Title Franz Ingelfinger Professor, Gastroenterology, Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine

With a background in gastroenterology and cancer biology, Dr. Roy has centered his research interests on GI cancer risk stratification using intermediate biomarkers of field carcinogenesis, in which large areas of cells are affected by cancer. He has been involved in the development and clinical implementation of a variety of techniques for risk stratification, complemented by a series of molecular markers including microRNAs. This work has served as a platform for assessing risk modification via chemoprevention and has been applied to a number of non-GI malignancies, including lung and ovarian cancer. Now, Dr. Roy’s team, supported by NIH funding, is applying these approaches for  risk stratification for men with early stage prostate cancer undergoing active surveillance.
