Marisol Fila earned her PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures, with a specialization in Spanish, from the University of Michigan in 2025, and holds a BA in History with honors from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Her interdisciplinary teaching and research bring together Latin American Studies, Global Black Studies, Literary Studies, Critical Media Studies, Digital Humanities, and public scholarship.
Marisol’s teaching emphasizes inclusive, experiential, and project-based learning. In courses on Spanish and Portuguese language, Latin American culture, Afro-Latin American studies, media, and digital humanities, she incorporates digital storytelling, podcasting, archival work, and zine-making. Her courses also provide beyond-the-classroom experiences, including collaborating with community members on documentaries and engaging with Latin American activists and artists as guest speakers. These experiences invite students to critically examine how media, literature, and the arts construct, contest, and communicate racial and cultural identities across local and transnational contexts.
Marisol is currently working on her first book project, “Re-Creating a Space for Black Media in Contemporary Buenos Aires and São Paulo,” which examines how Black writers, journalists, artists, and intellectuals in Argentina and Brazil use print and digital media to articulate national and diasporic Black identities. Focusing on contemporary Black presses such as El Afroargentino in Buenos Aires and O Menelick 2Ato in São Paulo, the project analyzes the relationship between media forms, racial formation, citizenship, and Black intellectual and curatorial authority. She is also developing a community-centered digital project on the archives of Cape Verdean organizations in Argentina, combining archival preservation, podcast production, and collaborative research to explore Black Spanish-Portuguese identities across the Black Atlantic.
Her research and teaching have been supported by fellowships and awards, including the MLA Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship, the Alfredo D. and Luz María P. Gutiérrez Dissertation Award, a Harvard University Pre-doctoral Visiting Fellowship, the Rackham Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award, and University of Michigan Arts Initiative Course Connections Awards.
