Jim Carter is a scholar of twentieth-century Italian culture. He is interested in industrialization, especially as it impacts artistic activity, the representation of labor and the transformation of the environment. He is the co-editor of two books, Italian Industrial Literature and Film: Perspectives on the Representation of Postwar Labor (Peter Lang, 2021) and Ecologia e lavoro: dialoghi interdisciplinari (Mimesis, 2023), and the author of articles in Modern Italy, Italian Culture, the Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies and many other publications. In 2018-2019 he won the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies from the American Academy in Rome. His current book project explores the contributions of the Olivetti typewriter and calculator company to the construction of a national business culture in Italy from the 1930s through the 1950s.

Carter teaches courses in Italian language, Italian Studies, Italian American Studies and Film Studies.
