Background

Carmen Torre Pérez joined the department of Romance Studies in 2022. Born and raised in Cantabria, Spain, she moved to the United States in 2014 and completed a PhD in Hispanic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. As a teacher, Carmen strives to bring understudied or marginalized topics to the forefront and is particularly interested in the study of Latin American underground cultures. Before joining BU, she taught Spanish language and culture at the University of Kansas and the University of Pennsylvania. Carmen was also involved in a prison education program at the Federal Detention Center of Philadelphia, where she tutored incarcerated women who wanted to study languages or get their GED. When she is not teaching, Carmen enjoys jogging, listening to reguetón or punk music, and spending time with her family.
