Silva Santiesteban Elected to Peruvian Congress
BU alumna Rocio Silva Santiesteban has won election to the Peruvian Congress, representing the capital city of Lima. Silva Santiesteban ran as a candidate of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front), a left-wing coalition. The Frente Amplio received 6% of the vote, giving it nine seats in the new congress.
Silva Santiesteban received her PhD in Hispanic Language & Literature from BU in 2006. She is a noted Peruvian poet and human rights activist, having served as the Executive Secretary of the Coordinadora Nacioinal de Derechos (National Human Rights Coordinator). She has also worked as a journalist and as a university professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Peru.
