Digital Hispanism: Exploring Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures through Digital Humanities

The Observatory of the Cervantes Institute at Harvard University, in collaboration with UNAM-Boston,  invites researchers interested in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures to present their work to the academic community. This call for papers is open to researchers and teachers from the academic world (professors as well as recent Ph.D.s, graduate and doctoral students, or final-year undergraduates), and also to professionals from the fields of libraries, museums, and other cultural industries who are interested in the theme of the Symposium.

This year’s Symposium aims to address projects and research in the field of Digital Humanities related to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, with a particular focus on initiatives developed in the United States. The Symposium seeks to provide an overview of projects, methodologies, or digital products that contribute to the study, documentation, teaching, and promotion of Spanish and Hispanic cultures. Of special interest are projects that explore, reflect on, or may have a significant impact in the United States, whether through the preservation of Spanish in its different varieties, the documentation of Hispanic cultures, or the creation of digital tools for research and teaching in this multicultural context.

Proposals may therefore address the analysis, description or results of a wide variety of digital projects, such as linguistic corpora, digital editions, databases, cartographies, chronograms, oral collections, repositories, libraries, pedagogical resources, technological tools, interfaces, etc.

The Symposium will be held in a hybrid format and will consist of two sessions, each including a keynote lecture, various 15-minute presentations or joint panels, and a final discussion. Both sessions will be streamed via Zoom, allowing presenters to participate either in person or online.

The presentations must be unpublished originals and may be delivered in either Spanish or English. Those interested should send their proposals to the following email address:

observatorio.sympo@fas.harvard.edu

The submission must include: participant’s name and affiliation; title of paper or panel; abstract of no more than 200 words (or 300 words for panels including all participants’ names); and preferred presentation format (in person or via Zoom).

The deadline for proposal submissions is FridayMarch 7th; notifications of acceptance will be sent by Wednesday, April 2nd.
