Mesch Seminar Hosts 2 Speakers

Dr. Rachel Mesch recently had two guest speakers in her LF 860 seminar, “Cultural Histories of the 19th Century.”

Susan Hiner, professor of French at Vassar and author of Behind the Seams: Women, Fashion, and Work in 19th-Century France. She shared her research on the complex and often hidden role of women as workers, creators, and writers in and around the fashion industry in nineteenth-century France.

Masha Belenky, professor of French at the George Washington University and author of Engine of Modernity: the Omnibus and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris, spoke to us about how she came to this interdisciplinary topic and shared adventures in Parisian archives and libraries.
